In this course participants will explore the occupational phenomenon of burnout and the physiology of stress within the fire service. Historical misconceptions about responder mental health and their long term consequences will be critically evaluated. Following this presentation participants should be able to: 1. Describe the physiological pathway of stress, and the associated brain structures involved. 2. Evaluate various coping strategies and identify their primary and secondary coping pathways for navigating stress. 3. Identify both short and long term consequences of prolonged stress across various life domains.
