This course recognizes that meeting the current and future staffing needs of fire service organizations today is more difficult than ever. Nearly every community is struggling to identify qualified candidates to join their organizations as well as retain the staff they have. This course will help identify the staffing challenges that many are facing through recruiting and offer innovative ways to recruit new people. A similar discussion will take place about the retention of current staff including what threats exist to cause people to leave your organization and what actions can be taken to reduce this threat. This presentation is intended to be in a discussion format where attendees will be active participants in the course discussion.

Fire departments across the nation continue to be challenged by rising call loads, an increase in low acuity calls for chronic medical conditions, mental health issues, and substance abuse problems. Many of these patients do not require ambulance transport to an ER, but they do need assistance and services. Paramedics are getting burned out responding to so many of these calls, making them unavailable to respond to the patients who truly need their life-saving skills.

Real time telemedicine and patient navigation finally allows EMS to break from the “You call, we haul” model. Low acuity patients can be safely treated in place and then social workers will follow up to provide linkage to primary care and community services. This model takes patient care and public safety to the next level, while reducing response times to critical calls and improving paramedic morale. Transforming emergency care…the time is now!

A common theme in today’s fire service is that communications, specifically between the staff and the line personnel is never enough. The key rests in how the message is communicated and who delivers the message.

This presentation will focus on the roles and responsibilities of that critical position in every organization, the connection between the 40-hour senior staff and the 24-hour line personnel. Whether the title is Battalion Chief, District Chief, or Division Chief, every organization has a position that is critical in connecting staff and line. How do successful Fire Chief’s enhance communications that ultimately improves consistency and performance at the company, station, and shift level?

The tragedy in Surfside has become a defining moment for many throughout emergency services. In these months that have followed, much has been done to help us better prepare for future events. The chaplaincy has also been impacted. It became very clear that there was work to be done to better connect and coordinate fire chaplains across Florida. Surfside showed the distinct nature of the chaplaincy and the need to provide spiritual support in times of crisis. For many, great difficulty can create a crisis of faith which challenges long held spiritual beliefs. In addition, we saw how the practice of spiritual disciplines provided peace and comfort. In addition, we also observed the complementary role chaplains play alongside mental health professionals, peer support personnel, and K-9 peer support. Together, we provide comfort and care for the heart, soul, mind and strength of Florida firefighters.

Emotional Intelligence is the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically. Emotional intelligence is the path to awareness of our unconscious biases, which is elementary to successful leadership in any work environment. This is where the aspects of self-regulation, empathy and social awareness work to build an inclusive space for those around us and assist in developing/managing effective and inclusive teams. Emotional intelligence is inextricably tied to Inclusive and Level 5 leadership, leadership styles that promote diverse perspectives, welcome feedback, and consider ideas with open minds. The session will define inclusive and Level 5 leadership and will link these leadership styles to emotional intelligence.
